WE IN PROGRESS (WIP) ist ein audio-visuelles Kunstprojekt der Initiative BLACK DADS GERMANY in Kollaboration mit YERO ADUGNA ETICHA (Black in Berlin). Als reines Monolog-Konzept angetreten bricht es mit der schnelllebigen, impulsiven und oftmals von Hate Speech geprägten, zügellosen Diskussionswelt des Internets. Die Arbeit konzentriert sich dabei auf die autobiografischen Lebensgeschichten Schwarzer Väter in einer mehrheitlich weißen Gesellschaft in Deutschland. Schwarze Väter leben teilweise seit Jahrzehnten in Deutschland oder sind hier geboren, aufgewachsen und sozialisiert. Ihre Leben wurden bisher nicht ausreichend dokumentiert – weder in Filmen, noch Theaterstücken oder Büchern.
Als Zeitkapseln archiviert, ermöglichen wir es zukünftigen Generationen einen Einblick in die Lebenswelten von Schwarzen Vätern zu erhalten. Basierend auf den BLACK DADS LISTENINGs entstehen Safer Spaces für Schwarze Menschen und gleichzeitig Grenzräume für weiße Allies. Räume, in denen eine Rückbesinnung auf die verloren gegangene Tugend des Zuhörens möglich ist.
Die empathische Wucht der interdisziplinären Arbeit wird durch die Portrait-Fotografie von YERO ADUGNA ETICHA (BDG Berlin) verstärkt. In seinem eigenen, dokumentarischen Fotografie-Projekt “Black in Berlin” widmet er sich der Sichtbarkeit Schwarzer Menschen in Berlin und setzt darüber Elemente der Schwarzen Diaspora-Erzählung in Beziehung zu den historischen, postkolonialen Erfahrungen.
Ausgestellt auf der Architecual Biennale in Venedig 2021 war WIP ein Teil des Kunstwerks "100 Ways to Say We" welches u.a. auf der online Plattform “100 Ways to say We. An Archive of the Future” unter www.100ways.space zu sehen ist.
2023 wurde WE IN PROGRESS beim Dortmund Goes Black Festival im Theater Dortmund, beim BLACK OUR STORY MONTH von Each One Teach One e.V., dem Stories of Color Festival in der Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt/Main erfolgreich ausgestellt und aufgeführt.
Gefördert durch den May Ayim Fonds gingen wir mit dem WIP Projekt erstmalig auf Tour durch Deutschland, moderiert von Andrew Fynecontry-de Bana und Yero Adugna Eticha (Black in Berlin)

WE IN PROGRESS Tour
WE IN PROGRESS is an audio-visual art project of the initiative BLACK DADS GERMANY in collaboration with YERO ADUGNA ETICHA (Black in Berlin). Intended as a pure monologue concept, it breaks with the fast-moving, impulsive and often hate-speech-ridden, unbridled world of discussion on the internet. The work focuses on the autobiographical life stories of Black fathers in a majority white society in Germany and examines (these life) stories of Black fathers who otherwise do not find a hearing. Some Black fathers have lived in Germany for decades or were born, raised and socialised here. Their lives have not been sufficiently documented so far - neither in films, nor in plays or books.
Archived as time capsules, we enable future generations to gain an insight into the lives of Black fathers. Supported by the moving portrait photography of YERO in the tradition of Malick Sidibé, we create a realistic, tangible and empathy-promoting space full of (life) stories.
Based on the BLACK DADS LISTENINGs, we create safe spaces for Black people and at the same time border spaces for white allies. Spaces in which there is a return to the lost virtue of listening. The empathic force of the interdisciplinary work is reinforced by the portrait photography of YERO ADUGNA ETICHA (BDG Berlin). In his own documentary photography project "Black in Berlin", he addresses the visibility of Black people in Berlin and, through this, relates elements of the Black diaspora narrative to historical, postcolonial experiences.
Exhibited at the Architecual Biennale in Venice 2021, WE IN PROGRESS was part of the artwork "100 Ways to Say We" which was published on the online platform "100 Ways to say We. An Archive of the Future" at www.100ways.space.
In 2023, WE IN PROGRESS was successfully exhibited and performed at the Dortmund Goes Black Festival at the Theater Dortmund, as well as at the BLACK OUR STORY MONTH of Each One Teach One e.V.
Supported by the May Ayim Fund, we were touring Germany for the first time with the WE IN PROGRESS project, hosted by Andrew Fynecontry-de Bana and Yero Adugna Eticha (Black in Berlin). Here you can find the cities and dates:
